Some day, when trees have shed their leaves
And against the morning's white
The shivering birds beneath the eaves
Have sheltered for the night,
We'll turn our faces southward, love ,
Toward the summer isle
Where bamboos spire to shafted grove
And wide-mouthed orchids smile
Analysis:
Life is a struggle but there is always hope
for a new start. Claude McKay uses the descriptions
of a beautiful place to present a new, fresh start in life.
This is a poem of hope, hope that when a new era is to come
the work and dedication of many who suffered will work to
create that place of happiness and freedom. The poem
personifies objects to represent the voices they have, their beauty.
Someday those personified objects will give hope to those whom struggle
to be strong and build their brighter side of life. There will be no more
suffering, that will be left behind and the time to take a
step forward is someday to come.
